ABOUT ME
Roberta Rachel Omin Licensed Clinical Social Worker
I earned my Masters degree in Social Work and my Post-Masters Certificate in Advanced Clinical Social Work at Hunter College, School of Social Work. In 1985 I opened my private psychotherapy practice while continuing to work in agencies. At that time, I was brought deeply into my work as I sat face to face with a man who had a terminal illness. He subsequently died. I was so moved by what took place that I wrote about his healing journey and our work together. It was published in “Clinical Social Work Journal” in 1989. Since that time, I have belonged to a group of oncology social workers and participate in the American Cancer Society’s Crisis Counseling program.
I am in awe of how life unfolds. In my later agency positions, I had the opportunity to work with individuals on the young side of life’s journey - children who had special needs and their families. This evolved into an area of keen interest and expertise. As a result, I have written and published numerous articles and newsletters about (special) parenting issues. Click here to find out more...
In the early 1990’s I was fascinated with mind/body holistic therapy and became a certified Gestalt therapist. The three-year program involved doing my own exploration as a client and working as a therapist under master level trainers. For several more years I reaped the benefits of studying with a gifted clinician in couples therapy and conflict resolution. I have been trained in two levels of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Over the last few years, I trained and became certified in Internal Family Systems. IFS is a holistic therapy that attends to and appreciates all of the parts that make us human.
With each training and workshop I attend, along with my intensive years of personal therapy, I have experienced significant growth. My profession as a therapist is my life’s work. I know the power of good psychotherapy from the inside out and have deep respect for my clients wherever they are on the path they travel.
Along with my clinical training and experience, my two adult sons and my grandchildren have been among my best teachers. Terry, my husband, also a licensed psychotherapist and I are actively involved in the professional community of the Westchester Chapter of the New York State Society for Clinical Social Work, Inc. I am passionate about travel and gardening and always have a creative project in the works.
